Deep Tissue Massage in San Francisco & Oakland, CA

Experience therapeutic deep tissue massage at Cocoon Day Spa, with locations in Soma, Noe Valley, and Oakland, CA. Our deep tissue massage in San Francisco works into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release the chronic tension that surface-level work leaves behind.

Every deep tissue massage at Cocoon begins with a thoughtful consultation, so your therapist understands where you carry tension, how much pressure you want, and what you need to walk out feeling. Whether it is a desk-bound neck and shoulders, a lower back that never quite settles, or legs recovering from training, your session is built around you rather than a script.

What Is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slow, deliberate strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the fascia that surrounds it. Rather than gliding across the surface, your therapist works across the grain of the muscle to break up adhesions, the bands of rigid tissue that form after injury, repetitive strain, or long hours held in one position.

Our Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage is a full body or specifically focused treatment that draws on a variety of methods, including trigger point therapy and myofascial techniques, to release deep-seated muscular tension and fascial restrictions.

The pressure is firm, but it is never something you simply endure. Your therapist checks in throughout the session and adjusts, because muscle that tightens against too much pressure defeats the purpose of the treatment. Most clients describe the work as intense in the moment and noticeably lighter afterward.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

  • Relief from chronic muscle tension. Sustained pressure releases knots and adhesions in the neck, shoulders, and lower back that lighter massage cannot reach.
  • Better range of motion. Freeing restricted fascia and lengthening shortened muscle restores movement that has quietly narrowed over time.
  • Faster recovery from training. Improved circulation to worked muscle helps clear metabolic waste and shortens the turnaround between hard sessions.
  • Reduced pain from postural strain. Long hours at a desk or behind a wheel load the same muscles the same way every day. Deep tissue interrupts that pattern.
  • Lower stress and better sleep. Deep, focused bodywork drops the nervous system out of a sustained stress response, and clients regularly report sleeping more deeply that night.

Deep Tissue vs. Swedish Massage: Which Should You Book?

Both are excellent. They are simply built for different goals.

Choose deep tissue massage if you have a specific area that hurts, tension that keeps returning to the same spot, a physical job or a training load, or you have had a Swedish-style massage before and wished it had gone deeper. Our Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage is the right starting point.

Choose a relaxation massage if what you need is to switch off. Our Essential Relaxation and Deep Relaxation massages use flowing, moderate-pressure strokes across the whole body, and the goal is calm rather than correction.

Not sure? Book either one and tell your therapist at consultation. Cocoon therapists blend techniques within a single session, so a relaxation massage can go deeper across your shoulders, and a deep tissue session can ease off into something gentler once the focused work is done.

Sports Massage and Recovery in San Francisco

Deep tissue is the foundation of the sports and recovery work our San Francisco and Oakland therapists do. Whether you are training for a marathon, riding the headlands every weekend, or simply back in the gym after a long gap, targeted deep tissue work helps you recover faster and train with fewer interruptions.

Sessions can focus on the areas that take the load, hips and hamstrings for runners, shoulders and thoracic spine for cyclists and swimmers, and can be timed around your training block. Book a 90 minute session if you want full-body treatment with concentrated work on two or three problem areas.

Add cupping to a deep tissue session for additional release across broad, stubborn areas like the upper back and IT band.

Deep Tissue Massage Pricing

Deep tissue massage is available seven days a week at all three Cocoon locations. Rockridge pricing differs slightly from our San Francisco locations and is noted inside each treatment below.

Rockridge: $163 / $230

A full body or specifically focused sophisticated massage using a variety of methods. Includes trigger point therapy and myofascial techniques to release deep-seated muscular tension and fascial restrictions that cause stress in the body. Ideal for guests experienced in massage.

Rockridge: $163 / $230

A full body, smooth flowing style of massage that combines our Essential Relaxation Massage and Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage. Ideal for when you want to relieve tension in the body as well as relax the mind.

A gentle, methodical approach that addresses restrictions in the muscles and the web of connective tissue known as fascia. Long, sustained holds at the barrier of tension ensure pressure is never too much, nor too little. A good next step if deep tissue alone has not resolved a long-standing restriction.

Rockridge: $325 / $470

Share the experience side by side in our candlelit couples massage room. Because the style is tailored to each individual, one of you can have a deep tissue massage while the other has a relaxation massage.

Cupping creates suction across broad areas of muscle and acts as a form of deep-tissue work. Added to a deep tissue massage, it helps release stubborn areas like the upper back and IT band.

Deep Tissue Massage FAQs

It should feel intense, not painful. Your therapist works at the edge of what your muscle will release rather than past it, and checks in throughout. If pressure ever crosses into pain, say so and it will be adjusted immediately. Muscle that braces against too much pressure will not release, so working harder is not working better.

Mild soreness for a day or two is normal, similar to the day after a good workout. Drink plenty of water, keep moving gently, and it passes. If you have an event or a hard training session coming up, book at least two days ahead of it.

Sixty minutes is enough for one or two focused areas. Choose 90 minutes if you want full-body work plus concentrated attention on problem spots, or if this is your first deep tissue session in a long time.

For chronic tension, every two to four weeks while you are working through it, then monthly to maintain. If you are training hard, many clients book every one to two weeks during a heavy block. Our massage memberships are built for exactly this.
